Welcome
USDA's Vilsack Salutes the Cooperative Extension

This year, USDA is celebrating the one hundredth anniversary of the Smith Lever Act, which established the Cooperative Extension System. Extension helps take research conducted at more than 100 land-grant university partners across the country and make it accessible to the general public.

Secretary Vilsack talks about ways to defuse the relentless fight over labeling genetically engineered foods by using a smart phone app.

The United Nations estimates the world population will increase to 9.6 billion people by the year 2050. In developing regions such as China, India, and Africa, the world will see a demand for food as never before. Some estimate we will need to produce as much food between now and 2050 as we have produced in the history of the world. Now is the time for our research scientists and students to make a global impact. The synergy of having the Biosecurity Research Institute, the future National Bio and Agro-Defense facility, the Kansas Department of Agriculture and Research Park all located near campus, makes Kansas State University poised to provide leadership for the global food industry. The need has never been greater. As the nation's original land grant university, Kansas State is up to the challenge.
